I realize it might seem like I’m dead if I don’t update this. Oops!

I’ve been at the Evan’s Knob farm in West Virginia since May 28, and it is a wonderful place. Kathy and Reid who run the farm have so much knowledge and are incredibly considerate hosts. I have been sharing a cabin with Nim, who is usually fermenting three or four different things in the kitchen.

Ezra, Nelly, and Maddie are great pyrhenees dogs who keep watch at night. Marley is a border collie who wants to play fetch and does not give up.

Kathy and Reid’s grandkids hang out on the farm some days. Carina is five and a half, and she loves to eat sugar snap peas right off the vine. She can’t help herself, she will eat and eat until she gets scolded.

For me most days have involved feeding and watering chickens, ducks, and rabbits, and then some combination of planting, weeding, and harvesting. The constant cycle of work-rest-work-rest surrounded by woods and growing things has been wonderfully peaceful, and I stayed a week and a half longer than I originally meant to.

I’ll help out at the farmer’s market tomorrow and then be on my way again! Next: Mammoth Cave in Kentucky -> St. Louis -> Lawrence, KS.
